Pack a picnic basket, wear your favorite Renaissance or romantic costume, and join us for a Renaissance Picnic among the roses, followed by an English Country Dance.

Renaissance costumes - any class - from the 14th through the 16th Centuries are admired but not required. As our picnic site is Alameda's beautiful Lincoln Park (near the Rose Garden) rather than Shakespeare's England or Italy, the weather can be very changeable, so both wraps and hats are strongly recommended. If you plan to dance, be sure to wear shoes or boots sturdy enough for outdoor dancing.

The event is not a general potluck since we wish to give PEERS' hard-working catering staff a holiday. Please bring your OWN picnic lunch. Our guests are encouraged to have fun making their picnic site look as Renaissance as possible. As there are no picnic tables in the Rose Garden side of the park, guests may want to bring blankets to sit on or period-looking picnic furniture and accoutrements.

Our celebrated historical dance band, Bangers & Mash will play an afternoon of early English Country Dances from 1 pm to 4:30 and will slip in a number of anachronistic waltzes as well. Tips for our brilliant and hard-working band will be much appreciated.

For costume inspiration, you might enjoy watching Franco Zefferelli's romantic film version of "Romeo and Juliet," though your English, Celtic, or Italian Renaissance Fair costumes are very welcome as well. Our inspiration is the world of Shakespeare's Verona but costumes and characters from any of Shakespeare's Renaissance-themed plays are also appropriate!
